Precontemplation & Contemplation Stages

Precontemplation & Contemplation Stages

In the first stage of recovery, people are not ready for addiction treatment because they find ways to defend and justify their behavior. Overlooking the negative consequences of their addiction, people in the precontemplation stage range from nascent addicts to those who have previously experienced failed attempts at recovery.

The next phase is contemplation and feeling ready to change. A distinct shift between the two stages is the recognition of the benefits that come with becoming drug-free. Increased awareness and openness to reason make the contemplation stage a pivotal phase in which family members and drug recovery centers can make a difference.

Preparation Stage

Preparation Stage

Developing a sense of urgency for sobriety is a key characteristic of the preparation phase. People in this stage tend to take action by joining a gym, seeing a counselor, or attempting to quit their habits on their own. However, this phase also finds addicts falling back to the contemplation and precontemplation stages when triggers and difficult emotions pop up.

Action Stage

Action Stage

After the significant progress made in the earlier processes, the action stage is about a commitment to change. With the desire to prolong sobriety, people in the action stage often turn to substance abuse treatment centers before or after they relapse. In addition to the self-awareness they have established, those in this stage go to counseling to stay on the path to recovery.

Maintenance Stage

Maintenance Stage

The maintenance stage is all about preventing relapse. With lifestyle changes having already been made in the preparation and action stages, this phase is where confidence is cultivated and long-term results are made. The maintenance stage can last anywhere between six months and five years. With support groups and healthy habits, commitment needs to be maintained to truly solidify change.
